Outdoor Learning
SMILE Meadow – Outdoor Learning for Life
At St Mark’s, we believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom. Our special outdoor learning space, SMILE Meadow (St Mark’s Ideal Learning Environment), provides children with opportunities to explore, discover and learn in a natural environment, while supporting their happiness, mental wellbeing and personal growth.
In 2009, we were fortunate to acquire one and three-quarter acres of land in Waste Wood, just a short walk from school. Featuring meadow, woodland and a stream, SMILE Meadow offers a rich and varied environment where every class can enjoy hands-on learning, develop curiosity and build a deeper connection with the natural world.
Outdoor learning offers so much more than a change of scenery. Spending time in nature can support positive mental health, reduce stress and encourage physical activity, creativity and resilience. Whether investigating wildlife, sharing stories, working collaboratively or simply enjoying the tranquillity of the outdoors, children have opportunities to build confidence, develop independence and create lasting memories.
Our site includes a sheltered learning area, a story chair, bridges across the stream, open fields and woodland to explore. We are currently working to repair and improve the facilities so that we can make even greater use of this wonderful resource. Family working parties have already helped clear vegetation, carry out repairs and make the site safe and welcoming for our children.
We are also developing our outdoor learning expertise. We have a qualified Forest School Leader within our team, with another member of staff currently working towards her Level 3 Forest School Leader qualification.
Help us grow our outdoor learning community
We welcome parent and carer volunteers to support our outdoor learning curriculum throughout the year. Whether you have practical skills, knowledge of the natural world or simply a love of the outdoors, your contribution could make a real difference. If you would like to get involved, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
At SMILE Meadow, we want every child to have the opportunity to connect with nature, nurture their wellbeing and discover that some of the most meaningful learning happens outdoors.
